For Hotels:
In 2024 the American Hotel & Lodging Association became co-owner of the Hotel Association of Canada’s Green Key Global certification program. The purpose is to move hotels toward sustainability certification to strengthen their commitment to environmental well-being. This certification is verified by a third-party auditing company to ensure compliance with the program. Additionally, travel booking agents, such as Booking.com, Expedia, and others now require a third party audited certification from an approved organization, such as Green Key Global.
For Destinations:
The Green Destinations Standard is the backbone of our Award & Certification program. It is a GSTC-recognized set of criteria to measure, monitor and improve the sustainability policy and management of destinations and regions. It makes sustainable development concrete, objective and demonstrable.

For Convention Centers / Venues:
The "Events Industry Council venue certification"Â primarily refers to the "Sustainable Event Standards" certification offered by the Events Industry Council (EIC), which assesses and recognizes venues that meet specific criteria for sustainability practices across various aspects of their operations, including energy usage, waste management, and social responsibility;Â essentially signifying a venue's commitment to environmentally conscious event hosting.
Â
For Events:
This standard helps event organizers integrate sustainability principles into planning and operations, addressing areas like resource use, waste management, community engagement, and stakeholder communication. ISO 20121 is suitable for events of all sizes, from local meetings to global conferences and sports events, and is designed to align sustainability efforts with broader organizational goals.
